According to the concierge, the most likely place to find that shade of blue feathers was the Peacock Lounge. I wasn’t convinced going undercover was the right idea. Have you seen what those women wear, or don’t wear? But I followed along in Summer’s wake. Marsha had yet to say a word, and wore a shocked expression since Summer’s announcement.

They entered the lounge through a side door and stepped into mayham. “Finally! My name is Mattie.” A showgirl clopped on stiletto heels in their direction. “Wow.” She stopped and narrowed her eyes. “You’re the best drag I’ve seen in a long time.”

“What?” Summer took a step back.

I giggled. “We aren’t in drag. We’re women.”

“Oh, my.” Marsha’s eyes widened. “You’re a man.”

He looked taken aback. “Seriously. That temp agency has got to go. Hurry now!” He ushered them to a dressing station. “Don those gorgeous costumes and do your best to act like a drag queen. We go on in fifteen minutes. I trust you can dance? Our customers can not find out you’re real women.” Shaking his head, he clip-clopped away.

“I can’t dance,” Marsha said. “Or walk in high heels.”

“It’ll be a cinch.” Summer donned a massive feathered headgear.

I held up a skimpy costume in red. “There is no way I’m putting this on and going on stage.”

“We have to. No one is going to talk to us unless we do something for them first.” Summer grabbed a costume in yellow. “I’m going to be a golden angel.” She held up a pair of feathered wings. “Hurry.”

“For crying out loud.” Marsha donned a pink halter top and non-matching bottoms. “Duane would die laughing if he could see me.”

“My fiancé would probably sell tickets.” I dressed and peered into the mirror. “Heavy makeup will help us look the part. Make it snappy, ladies.”

“This will be fun.”

“Says the woman chased through a carnival fun house.” I shook my head.

Marsha grabbed my arm. “I just saw Cher. She looks really good for her age.”

“Seriously?” Her naivety was cute, but everyone knew drag queens favored Cher and Liza. “That’s one of the guys.”

“Oh.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Thank goodness I’m not as blessed as Summer. I’d die of embarrassment.”

“They come in handy when you have to hide a wire.” Summer told us of the time she helped the FBI. “We didn’t catch the person then, but it was exciting.” She slathered on thick eyeliner and bright fuschia lipstick. “I don’t think our mothers would recognize us in these getups. Let’s take a picture in the mirror.”

Her enthusiasm was contagious. She was right. With the costume and heavy makeup, we didn’t resemble ourselves. “Let’s have fun with this,” I said. “Then, we’ll get to work. After all, I’m in Vegas on a mini vacation.” I turned where Marsha dug through assorted costume pieces. “What are you looking for?”

“Matching bottoms. I can’t wear blue bottoms with a pink top and yellow shoes.” She held up something that looked like Mercury’s boots.

“You’ll never see these people again.
